Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 6: Mohd Fahmi Aliman on co-operatives and their role in Singapore

01:07 Min

There are 80 registered co-operative societies (co-ops) in Singapore that provide a variety of services including supermarket, thrift and loan, childcare and welfare services. The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that the business model of co-ops serves people’s social and economic needs in bad times and not just in good times. MP Mohd Fahmi Aliman said this in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 6). He asked how co-ops can be further supported to continue their unique role alongside other business entities in the "do good" space, thereby reinforcing Singapore's commitment to social cohesion and inclusive growth.
