Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 6: Ong Hua Han on ensuring proactive data security

01:35 Min

NRIC numbers continue to serve as a gateway to accessing personal, though not secret, information in Singapore, said NMP Ong Hua Han. In parliament on Friday (Mar 7), he cited the example of the eligibility checker for the Matched Retirement Savings Scheme on the CPF website. The personal information available could be used by scammers to build credibility and manipulate vulnerable individuals through social engineering tactics, said Mr Ong. Calling for the right balance to be struck between convenience and security, he said the Ministry of Digital Development and Information (MDDI) is best placed to help government agencies “develop the instinct for proactive data security”.
