Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 6: Tin Pei Ling on sustainable and safe digital growth, digital talents and community and AI for business

14:24 Min

Singapore's digital economy grew from contributing 13 per cent of the gross domestic product in 2017 to 17.7 per cent in 2022. Yet, as Singapore picks up its pace in its march towards a digital future, it must also ensure that digitally driven growth must be sustainable, inclusive and safer for all, said MP Tin Pei Ling in parliament on Friday (Mar 7). She noted that Singapore’s digital growth must be enabled by high-performing, resilient and secure digital infrastructure, and asked the Minister for Digital Development and Information to share measures that have been put in place to build up Singapore’s digital infrastructure further. She also asked the minister to elaborate on the government's strategy to balance the growth of Singapore’s digital infrastructure with its commitment to environmental sustainability. Touching on the National AI Strategy 2.0 report, Ms Tin asked the minister for updates and also wanted to know what is being done to strengthen Singapore’s digital talent pool and enhance the staying power of these talents and community of partners in Singapore. She also asked how the Infocomm Media Development Authority plans to support businesses at different stages of digital maturity in adopting and leveraging generative AI technologies. Highlighting challenges posed by geopolitical tensions which can affect companies' decisions on which generative AI models to adopt, she also asked if it would be possible for Singapore to develop or distill its own AI models so that companies can leverage on this and continue to grow and develop with a greater sense of assurance.
