Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 6: Elysa Chen on placemaking for thriving 'third spaces'

01:39 Min

In parliament on Thursday (Mar 5), MP Elysa Chen highlighted the importance of having “third spaces” or intermediate spaces in the heartlands where young people can socialise and access mental health support. She noted that in Singapore, traditional spaces such as void decks have “no football” signs put up and malls require spending, which may discourage youth from utilising them as such. She asked if the government will pilot “third space” hubs in the heartlands, co-locating informal hangout areas with access to mental health, mentoring and work-study support.
