Dennis Tan on Adoption of Children Bill
In Parliament on Monday (May 9), MP Dennis Tan expressed concern that changes in a Bill to overhaul legislation on the adoption of children could lead to an increase in the costs of adoption. For example, a new suitability assessment will be a pre-requisite for all adoption applications and will be carried out by authorised adoption agencies. Mr Tan asked about the estimated fees that will be charged and whether these will be capped by the Government. He also wondered why the process will be handled by adoption agencies instead of the four social service agencies which currently issue Home Study Reports for prospective adoptions. Mr Tan also pointed to possible compliance costs for adoption agencies to uphold new governance standards.
