Dennis Tan on Electric Vehicles Charging Bill

09:21 Min

Would the Government consider building electric vehicle (EV) charging points on a larger scale in advance of demand, even if that might lead to slight excess capacity in the short term? MP Dennis Tan asked the question in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 30), noting that given current trends, the additional 12,000 chargers being planned in HDB car parks islandwide by 2025 may not be enough. He also wanted to know about the formula to determine the number of EV chargers which will be optimal for car parks in different types of developments. He said the number and siting of chargers will be critical to meet varying needs and minimise waiting times. On commercial and industrial use of EVs, Mr Tan said direct Government support to electrify delivery fleets and build charging infrastructure in industrial facilities could “send a powerful signal” that it is serious about leading carbon emissions reduction across all segments of land transport.
