Dennis Tan on Extradition (Amendment) Bill

05:08 Min

Does Singapore expect to see a spike in the number of fugitives being extradited, in light of changes outlined in the Extradition (Amendment) Bill as well as the recently concluded extradition treaty with Indonesia? MP Dennis Tan asked this question in Parliament on Monday (Apr 4). He also raised other points of clarification on the Bill. These included whether a fugitive consenting to extradition would obviate the need for a magistrate to ensure that the request complies with the requirements of the Extradition Act, and what safeguards are in place to prevent abuse of the “record of the case” mechanism by which a jurisdiction can summarise evidence when requesting extradition.
