Desmond Choo on Prisons (Amendment) Bill

06:26 Min

As many eligible prison inmates as possible should be included in the new Employment Preparation Scheme, said MP Desmond Choo in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 11). He asked how inmates will be assessed to qualify and if they will be made aware of the criteria so they can work towards it. Noting that quality of placements will be critical to success, he asked if pilot place-and-train sectors can be developed. Mr Choo also urged longer-term support for ex-offenders after their release. He suggested enhancing the Jobs Growth Initiative to encourage employers to hire former inmates, with Government support running longer than 12 months.
