Desmond Tan on Environmental Protection and Management (Amendment) Bill

Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions from refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment are potent greenhouse gases and Singapore is moving to halve their output by 2030. From October 2022, new supply of such equipment with high global warming potential will not be allowed, starting with certain household air conditioners and fridges, and commercial water-cooled chillers. In Parliament on Monday (Sep 13), Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Desmond Tan said climate-friendly, cost-effective alternatives are widely available. Companies handling HFC refrigerants will be regulated and spent HFC refrigerants will be classified as "industrial waste" that must be properly treated. Also from October next year, electronic video surveillance will be imposed on a small proportion of construction firms that fail to comply with the no-work rule on Sundays and public holidays.
