Don Wee on Energy Transition Measures and Other Amendments Bill

05:51 Min

The Government must ensure that any power rationing measures during emergencies are fair and do not unduly disrupt economic activities or disadvantage those already struggling to make ends meet, said MP Don Wee. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 9), he wanted to know what criteria would be used to define an emergency to justify power rationing, as well as the thresholds for such exercises. Mr Wee pointed out that energy security and environmental sustainability are inextricably linked, making it critical for Singapore to act decisively in accelerating this transition. He noted that one of the objectives of the Energy Transition Measures and Other Amendments Bill is to introduce guardrails for electricity market policies by establishing regulations for centralised gas procurement. He voiced concerns over the potential risks and vulnerabilities and wanted to know how the Government would mitigate the risks.
