Edward Chia on advancing mental health
Singapore’s enterprises and entrepreneurs have not only economic value but are “agents of social change”, said MP Edward Chia. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6), he said strengthening mental wellness at the workplace is a “social mission worth advancing”. He stressed the need to partner with enterprises to make mental wellness a cornerstone of Singapore’s economic and social strategy so that Singaporeans can maximise their potential and derive purpose and meaning in their endeavours. Mr Chia pointed out that most adult Singaporeans spend a large part of their time at the workplace. Better support at the workplace will make a significant difference to the overall wellness of society and create positive ripple effects for other segments in the community, he said. He called for more support for employers so that they can set the tone for everyone in the organisation to contribute to systemic improvements in workplace mental health. These include harmonising existing measurement tools to get a fuller understanding of employees and scaling up champions networks to share best practices.
