Fadli Fawzi on Scams (Countermeasures) and Other Matters Bill

09:07 Min

While fully supporting the use of “every tool necessary” to protect Singaporeans from scams, MP Fadli Fawzi called for stronger procedural safeguards for those whose bank accounts are implicated in scam-related offences and disabled - in particular, vulnerable individuals who may have been manipulated by criminal syndicates. He suggested that the government first, consider legislative provisions to simplify the process for modest sums to be released automatically from frozen accounts for subsistence; and second, consider extending the guarantee of basic banking to all Singapore citizens, permanent residents and work pass holders so that no resident is left without an account they can use. Mr Fadli spoke in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 8).
