Even as the police are given stronger powers to tackle scams, innocent people must be protected, said MP Gabriel Lam in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 8). Just like regular updates are being provided on restriction orders under the Protection from Scams Act, he asked for similar “open data” on the new powers - how many disclosure, account disabling and service limitation orders are issued, challenged or withdrawn; and how long the orders remain in place. This information will help the authorities and public understand whether the powers are being used properly and whether they are working as intended, said Mr Lam.
