Gan Siow Huang on supply of school bus services

05:49 Min

For most schools run by the Ministry of Education, school bus fares have risen by up to 10 per cent this year, while those for special education schools have gone up more due to a smaller pool of bus operators that can meet their more complex needs. This was revealed by Minister of State for Education Gan Siow Huang in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 22) in response to an MP’s questions. She said demand for school bus services has been relatively stable. However, some operators are facing a shortage of drivers, partly due to the post-pandemic reopening of the economy. This is compounded by rising fuel prices which have affected the viability of some providers. As a result, they have had to raise fares to reflect rising costs and the need to attract and retain enough drivers. Ms Gan said her ministry is looking into these issues. She also gave details of subsidies and financial assistance available to help needy families defray the costs.
