Gan Siow Huang on supporting healthcare
Health is wealth and investing in our health early will pay dividends for the rest of our lives, said Minister of State for Education Gan Siow Huang in Parliament on Wednesday (May 10). Detailing her ministry’s approach, she said from the time they start going to school, students acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to cultivate an active and healthy lifestyle and maintain it beyond their school years. For example, healthy habits are encouraged at preschool level while older students learn about healthy eating, sufficient sleep and regular exercise, along with picking up sports and games during physical education classes. They can stay physically active with co-curricular activities and by using facilities and equipment in schools and Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs). All schools and IHLs also actively promote healthy eating, such as by providing healthier food and drink options. Students are also equipped with knowledge and skills to strengthen their mental well-being, build resilience and thrive amid challenges. This includes learning to manage their use of social media and develop a healthy online peer support culture. Ms Gan said MOE also shares practical tips with parents on building a positive family environment to enhance their children’s overall well-being.
