Gan Thiam Poh on Platform Workers Bill
Platform workers perform important services utilised by many Singaporeans and residents and should be accorded similar protection and benefits as employees in similar wage bands, said MP Gan Thiam Poh. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 10), he said the Platform Workers Bill will help to boost their retirement and housing adequacy and ensure they receive the necessary compensation and representation. He highlighted the need to spell out the number of hours of work and overtime for platform workers to prevent overworking and ensure adequate pay. He wanted to know if the Government would consider such regulations. Mr Gan highlighted the need to weed out unqualified persons to help protect the livelihoods of genuine platform workers. He also pointed out that there have been cases of foreigners coming to Singapore to do delivery work and wanted to know how the Government would tackle this.
