Gan Thiam Poh on Protection from Scams Bill
Scam cases have become increasingly rampant in recent years despite ongoing public education campaigns by the Government and banks, said MP Gan Thiam Poh. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 7), he voiced support for the proposed measures to restrict bank transactions to protect vulnerable individuals. Mr Gan pointed out that the effectiveness of the Protection from Scams Bill depends on the rapid response and investigative capabilities of the police and sought clarification on their powers. He also asked if the Government can require banks to add certain procedures to give both the police and banks more time to get the necessary explanation and confirmation from the affected individuals.
