Gan Thiam Poh on Registration of Criminals (Amendment) Bill
DNA data has proven to be critical in providing breakthroughs and helping the police to solve certain crimes in recent years, said MP Gan Thiam Poh. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 12), he said the expanded powers for the police to collect DNA information will mean a larger database that greatly enhances their ability to solve cases and prevent crimes. He stressed the need to ensure that the data is safely protected against misuse, abuse and theft. He urged the authorities to minimise the risks of human error and sample mismatches.
