Gan Thiam Poh on Resource Sustainability (Amendment) Bill

01:27 Min

With a charge to be imposed for disposable carrier bags from the middle of this year, how will the Government ensure that businesses pass on the cost savings from plastic bags to consumers? MP Gan Thiam Poh asked this question in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 22), saying the cost must have previously been priced in to the selling prices of goods. He also asked if the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment will work with retailers to make available alternatives such as biodegradable bags. On the planned beverage container return scheme, Mr Gan wanted to know how the authorities will ensure that return points are easily accessible beyond supermarkets - for example, at hawker centres, coffee shops and food courts.
