Grace Fu on chicken shortage and food security
Singapore currently has 25 accredited sources of chicken and continues to diversify its sources of food overall to improve security of supply. Sustainability and the Environment Minister Grace Fu said this in Parliament on Monday (Jul 4) in response to MPs’ questions about the shortage of chicken caused by an export ban in Malaysia. On the possibility of poultry production in Singapore, Ms Fu said the Government prefers to focus on farming food items that can be produced in a resource-efficient and commercially sustainable way. She added that when supply disruptions occur, price controls or subsidies for food would distort business conditions and may not be financially sustainable.
