Hany Soh on advancing mental health

12:41 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6), MP Hany Soh spoke about mental wellness during and after pregnancy - for both mothers and fathers. She said all public and private hospitals in Singapore that provide obstetrics and gynaecology (O&G) services should be uniformly equipped with capabilities and resources to provide early detection and timely intervention to parents showing signs of needing psychological support. She asked if more polyclinics can also provide mental health-related services to new parents during regular check-ups for babies. It is also important to develop peer support networks in the community and increase awareness of post-partum depression, she said. Fathers must not be forgotten either, with a need to reduce the social stigma of men seeking emotional help - whether through family and friends or via professional counselling, said Ms Soh. She also suggested looking into an “expanded version of remote working” to ease the transition from paternity leave to resuming normal duties at work.
