He Ting Ru on Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill

12:39 Min

Deepfakes pose a serious threat to Singapore’s democratic processes, particularly during elections, said MP He Ting Ru. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 15), she warned that the proliferation of highly realistic yet fabricated content, particularly in the digital realm, poses a risk to Singapore’s electoral system and will shake the trust that citizens have in the democratic process. Ms He cautioned against quick fixes that centralise control over truth. She said it would be more helpful to invest in nuanced public education strategies in “pre-bunking” because prevention is more impactful than cure. It works like inoculation and aims to build mental resilience against misinformation before being exposed to its full force, she said. This approach seems to work across different cultures and differing political views and should be integrated into Singapore’s wider strategy, she added. She also sought clarifications on the Bill - on the scoping of the prohibitions, reporting and investigation of alleged offences, as well as the potential misuse of the regime.
