Hoon Hian Teck on International Development Association (Amendment) Bill
For a decade after Singapore became fully independent, it benefited from external loans that supported its journey on the path of economic development, says NMP Hoon Hian Teck. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday (Oct 20), he said the Singapore experience suggests that when political and economic institutions are set up to support integration with the global economy to facilitate the transfer of technology, there is "growth take-off". He said Singapore's subscription to the International Development Association as a donor country allows it to contribute to a global fund that can potentially enable other countries to get onto a path of economic development, just as Singapore did. He believes Singapore can make a meaningful contribution to the global effort in infrastructure development and disease eradication.
