Over the years, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) observed observed that the same patients with alcohol misuse issues kept returning to its emergency department. To alleviate this extra load on A&E resources, KTPH introduced the Alcohol-Related Frequent Attenders (ARFA) programme.
A team comprising a community nurse and a social worker visits such patients regularly where they live, helping to deal with psychosocial factors contributing to their alcoholism, referring them for further help if need be, and encouraging them to reduce their alcohol intake - all without judgement.
