There is an increasing risk of an accidental escalation of conflict in the region, should China get into a confrontation with another country, especially in the South China Sea, where various nations are stuck in a territorial dispute. For example, if a collision happens between a Chinese and Filipino vessel, the United States would get involved due to a mutual defence treaty it has with the Philippines.
