Indranee Rajah on designing HDB estates against wind-swept rain

07:16 Min

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) uses various design strategies to mitigate the extent of rainwater splashing into flats and common areas even as it designs for natural ventilation and ample lighting. In view of increasingly volatile weather patterns brought about by climate change, HDB has conducted wind-driven rain simulations for all new public housing developments since 2021 to put in place mitigating measures early. These include rain screens and canopies at the lift lobbies, which are generally adequate to keep rainwater out of the lift areas. Second Minister for National Development Indranee Rajah said this in reply to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 16).
