Jamus Lim on Electric Vehicles Charging Bill
What safety features and public education efforts are being put in place to address consumer concerns about the potential risks posed by new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations? These include battery-related fires, electric shocks and cyber-hacking, said MP Jamus Lim in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 30). He asked how inadvertent violations that compromise safety can best be handled. Assoc Prof Lim also said the number of charging stations in HDB car parks may have to be calibrated to ensure there are enough for EV owners as well as “power users” such as taxi and private-hire drivers. He suggested targeting a higher minimum ratio for EV charging stations in non-landed private residences to ensure they do not fall behind. Finally, he proposed ways in which the Certificate of Entitlement system can be tapped to help Singapore’s EV transition and phase out internal combustion engine vehicles.
