Janil Puthucheary on addressing rise in suicide cases
Among cases of suicide, “there are a significant number” who had not sought help before taking their own lives, said Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary in Parliament on Thursday (Aug 3). He said improving the accessibility and quality of assistance and mental health services is one of the areas that the Interagency Taskforce on Mental Health and Well-being is looking into. At the same time, society plays a critical role in reducing or eliminating stigma against mental illness. Dr Janil elaborated on multiple initiatives that have been introduced to raise awareness and build mental resilience. These include measures targeted at seniors who live alone and youths, as well as helping parents better support their children to tackle stress. Dr Janil was responding to an MP’s question.
