Janil Puthucheary on developing expertise in AI foundation models
Singapore has a strong base of artificial intelligence (AI) researchers working on various aspects of foundation models (FMs), such as helping FMs better understand visual and audio inputs, evaluating their performance and developing FMs better suited to regional use cases. The country generally ranks among the top 10, based on publications at leading AI conferences, across areas such as natural language processing and computer vision. It also has an active AI industry research scene, with R&D centres by companies such as Salesforce, SAP and Alibaba. It is “not usually necessary or beneficial to rely solely on indigenous capabilities” to advance Singapore’s economic interests. For instance, the country has built thriving aerospace manufacturing and aviation services without developing or owning aircraft technologies. Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary made these points in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 7) in reply to an MP’s question on whether there was a whole-of-Government plan to develop indigenous capabilities in creating and deploying AI FMs.
