Janil Puthucheary on incidence of HFMD in preschools

02:58 Min

Based on data from 2018 to 2022, the annual number of preschools with clusters of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) ranged from 352 to 1,073 for childcare centres and 34 to 152 for kindergartens. That translates to 23 per cent to 66 per cent of childcare centres and 11 per cent to 37 per cent of kindergartens. The number of reported clusters fell in 2020 and 2021, likely influenced by COVID-19-related community safe management measures. Last year, the number rose, but it is too soon to tell if that reflects a rising post-pandemic trend. There have been no reported severe cases of HFMD since 2019. These details were given by Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 22). He was answering an MP’s question.
