Janil Puthucheary on progress of Beverage Container Return Scheme
The Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) has seen encouraging progress in the first three months since it was launched. A total of 5.5 million empty drink containers has been collected, with more than one million successful transactions. This number is expected to grow as more BCRS-labelled products enter the market. Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Janil Puthucheary, who gave this update in reply to an MP’s questions in parliament on Wednesday (Aug 5), said all 1,070 Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) that were planned for the initial rollout are operational. This would allow over 90 per cent of HDB residents to be within a five-minute walk of an RVM. The government is on track to increase the number of return points to around 2,000 within the first year of implementation, he added.
