Jean See on Child Development Co-Savings (Amendment) Bill

04:00 Min

Freelancers need better protection from having contracts terminated on grounds related to pregnancy, said NMP Jean See in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 13). She asked if it could be stated upfront in the Tripartite Standard on Contracting with Self-Employed Persons that employers should consider “substitution options” instead of termination in such cases. She also sought assurance that the authorities will not condone such discrimination if a freelancer were to bring a case to the Tripartite Alliance for Fair and Progressive Employment Practices or the Small Claims Tribunal. Ms See also asked if the Government-paid maternity leave amount could be paid out to eligible freelancers at the start of maternity leave and not after the ninth week.
