Jessica Tan on Energy Transition Measures and Other Amendments Bill

Strengthening energy security, ensuring its energy markets are cost competitive and efficient and transitioning to decarbonise the power sector for energy sustainability are existential priorities for a small country like Singapore, said MP Jessica Tan. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 9), she stressed the need for strong commitment and action from all stakeholders and not just the Government. She said the efforts are not straightforward and will take time to achieve. “The proposed amendments in the Bill are timely. But how we move forward and execute is equally important,” she said. Ms Tan also sought clarifications relating to the Future Energy Fund (FEF) and central gas entity (Gasco). On the FEF, she wanted to know what criteria will be used in the selection for funding. As for Gasco, she wanted to know how the Energy Market Authority would measure the cost effectiveness in securing sufficient gas supply for Singapore’s power needs and providing competitive pricing to the power generation companies.
