Keith Chua on advancing mental health

13:12 Min

People recover from mental health issues at a different pace; in severe cases, it can take years. And if a person is unable to return to work, they have no specific access to financial support as mental illness is not classified as a disability in Singapore. NMP Keith Chua said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6). He asked if the Government could look into a disability allowance scheme for such individuals, as this could extend their rehabilitation options. He pointed out that this kind of support is available in places including Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Australia, England and the United States. Mr Chua also called for support to encourage more employers to step forward and provide suitable job opportunities for people recovering from mental health issues, as “there is a cost attached" to doing so. He suggested expanding the Enabling Employment Credit scheme for persons with disabilities to include those with mental health conditions.
