Koh Poh Koon on challenges faced by gig workers

About 190,000 people were self-employed last year, of whom some 79,000 worked with platform companies. Among these, half were private-hire car drivers, a third were taxi drivers and the rest were mostly delivery riders. From 2018 to 2020, the median monthly income in these three occupations ranged between S$1,500 and S$2,000. Those details were given by Senior Minister of State for Manpower Koh Poh Koon in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 14) in response to MPs’ questions. He also revealed that there were two fatalities among delivery riders in each of the past two years. MOM is setting up an advisory committee to look into strengthening protections for platform workers.
