Koh Poh Koon on collection of kickbacks from migrant workers
Between 2016 and 2020, enforcement action was taken against an average of 102 errant employers for collecting kickbacks from migrant workers as a condition or guarantee of employment. Senior Minister of State for Manpower Koh Poh Koon said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1) in a reply to an MP’s question. Mr Koh said that on average, five migrant workers were affected per employer and the typical amount of kickbacks could range from S$1,000 to S$3,000. He added that the Ministry of Manpower has made use of data analytics to identify unusual patterns in hiring practices to better detect cases of kickbacks, and utilised data mining capabilities to strengthen its evidence-gathering procedures.
