Koh Poh Koon on studying idea of cohort smoking bans
The Ministry of Health (MOH) is open to studying the idea of a cohort smoking ban, taking into consideration several factors. These include Singapore's decreasing number of youths who smoke, the prevalence of e-cigarettes and challenges of enforcement. Senior Minister of State for Health Koh Poh Koon said this in response to Parliamentary questions on Tuesday (Jan 11) on the prospects of adopting laws similar to New Zealand's lifetime ban on the sale of cigarettes to youths of a certain cohort. He said it is an "attractive" proposal, as it prevents young people from taking up smoking while not putting too many restrictions on older smokers. With time, more and more cohorts will be smoking-free. Dr Koh said MOH will study how this law will work in New Zealand and how it can be applied to Singapore.
