Lawrence Wong on Gambling Duties Bill
A Bill was put up for debate in Parliament on Monday (Jan 10) to consolidate laws on the levy and collection of duties on lawful betting and lotteries, which are currently contained within two separate Acts. The changes provide for common tax administration, enforcement powers and penalties across duties on betting, sweepstakes and private lotteries. For instance, the Bill harmonises what constitutes an offence involving gambling duties, and raises the requisite fines and penalties which have been unchanged since the 1950s. The details were outlined by Finance Minister Lawrence Wong.
