Leon Perera on Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill
How the powers of the new Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill (FICA) are used is a matter of public interest and deserves public scrutiny, said MP Leon Perera in Parliament on Monday (Oct 4). He moved amendments requiring the Government to publicise all its decisions made under FICA, along with the reasons - to be done online, without charge, for ease of use and accountability. It is crucial that this be codified in the law, he said. Mr Perera also noted that the Bill overlooks the potential for foreigners to interfere in Singapore’s affairs by influencing senior Government figures such as the Prime Minister or the Home Affairs Minister. He asked what recourse Singapore would have, if that were to happen.
