Leon Perera on Preservation of Monuments (Amendment) Bill

Approach heritage protection as a "democratic effort", with buy-in and active involvement of different stakeholders, including monument owners, occupiers, civil society and the general public, said MP Leon Perera. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 2), he voiced support for the "general direction" of the Preservation of Monuments (Amendment) Bill. He put forth suggestions and sought assurances on three areas of protection. These are protection for monument owners and public interest through appropriate judicial oversight, protection of actual and proposed national monuments through stronger stakeholder engagement and support, and protection of heritage in a more holistic manner.
