Liang Eng Hwa on moving towards a low-carbon society

While Singapore hopes to get to the "promised land" in double quick time, it must ensure that all stakeholders are able to keep up with the pace, said MP Liang Eng Hwa. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 12), he said there will be pain points and tradeoffs for businesses. The transition must be inclusive, he said. If businesses can overcome the odds, they will reap good returns and capture new and greater market share in the longer term. Mr Liang urged the Government to closely support businesses as they overcome the initial challenges and pivot to low-carbon practices. The Government should be open about the timeline to increase its carbon tax to give businesses time to adjust and minimise "casualties", he said.
