Lim Biow Chuan on Public Defenders Bill
Many accused persons struggle to understand the legal process whenever they are faced with a criminal charge, said MP Lim Biow Chuan. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Aug 1), he stressed the need for the Government to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected, and said he is "glad" the Public Defenders Bill has been introduced in Parliament. He also sought clarifications on the Bill. One of them relates to the disclosure of privileged information from the solicitor and client to the Chief Public Defender. He wanted to know how this requirement could affect the solicitor's duties. He also urged the Government to consider allowing criminal defence aid to persons accused of dangerous driving.
