Louis Chua on Gambling Duties Bill
The issue of problem gambling and its social ills deserve utmost priority, said MP Louis Chua. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Jan 10), he stressed the need to bear in mind the less visible social costs and risks of negative externalities associated with an expanded gambling scene in Singapore. He urged the Government to continue to tighten its safeguards, not just against casino visits by locals but to other forms of gambling, particularly on online platforms. He also said there is room for betting taxes to be raised. He sought clarifications on the Bill, including the Government’s expectations of the additional revenues from higher casino taxes over the longer term.
