Louis Ng on Constitution and Penal Code Amendment Bills relating to Section 377A
The proposed repeal of Section 377A offers an opportunity for Singaporeans to learn to disagree in a spirited but civil way, said MP Louis Ng. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 29), he said such open debate is a sign of a "healthy and functioning democracy". He stressed the need to continue the dialogue on issues affecting the gay community with the intent of achieving progress for everyone. He also sought clarifications on the Bills. Mr Ng said the continued stigmatisation of gay Singaporeans because of their record of conviction under Section 377A must be wrong. He wanted to know how such individuals will be treated with the proposed changes to the law. He also called for more support for students of diverse genders. He wanted to know how teachers and counsellors in schools can support such students. Mr Ng also stressed the need to adequately support single parents even as the Government moves to promote the institution of marriage.Â
