Louis Ng on Endangered Species (Import and Export) (Amendment) Bill
As a “critical nexus” of the illegal wildlife trade, Singapore must rethink its broader policy approach towards tackling the problem, said MP Louis Ng in Parliament on Monday (Jul 4). He suggested categorising wildlife trafficking activities as serious offences under the Organised Crime Act, saying this would allow the authorities to target kingpins rather than runners, and follow and cut off money trails in the trade. He also proposed increasing the maximum aggregate fine for offences, offering not just protection but rewards for informers, and making the buying of protected wildlife species an explicit crime.
