How will the Ministry of Health (MOH) regulate the risks posed by telemedicine, which has become more prevalent due to the COVID-19 pandemic? MP Louis Ng asked this question in Parliament on Monday (Mar 6). He noted that certain risks may be more prominent in telemedicine than in conventional medicine, such as actual or claimed misdiagnosis and breaches of doctor-patient confidentiality. Mr Ng also asked for more examples of exceptional situations where licensing conditions may be changed without the required notice. Finally, Mr Ng asked about the risks of misleading advertising of healthcare services using visual imagery. He pointed out that the word “Dr” does not need to be used; misleading ads could feature people wearing scrubs or operating medical machinery. He asked if MOH considered a complete ban on the use of “Dr” in healthcare advertising, since there is “really no honest reason” for an ad to invoke the title without referring to an actual medical doctor or dentist.
