Louis Ng on Law Enforcement and Other Matters Bill

06:24 Min

The Bill will strengthen Singapore’s ability to tackle scams by targeting irresponsible or fraudulent registration, transfer and possession of SIM cards, said MP Louis Ng. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Apr 2), he warned that the ways of using technology for wrongdoings are constantly evolving. Constantly introducing new offences to tackle specific methods and technologies, if unchecked, may lead to a fragmented set of criminal laws that could be difficult for the layperson to keep track and understand, he said. He wanted to know the rationale for introducing new offences instead of relying on existing provisions. He voiced concern that Singapore could end up with a proliferation of laws which could become too complicated to understand.
