Louis Ng on Preservation of Monuments (Amendment) Bill

03:23 Min

The Preservation of Monuments (Amendment) Bill sends a clear signal on the importance of Singapore's heritage sites and gives the authorities the tools they need to protect them, said MP Louis Ng. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 2), he sought clarifications on several aspects of the Bill. One of them is on the punishment to be meted out to those who damage monuments. He agreed that there should be some leniency for people who damage or alter monuments but acted in good faith to comply with the law. He suggested that the Government work with monument owners to ensure that there are clear signs and labels to inform the public who may not know that they are in or around a national monument, especially with the expanded definition to cover less concrete structures like bodies of water and plots of land.
