A new role of “protector” to respond to cases of family violence will hold significant powers, ranging from making an Emergency Order before a court order is obtained, to removing victims from their homes in some circumstances. What then will be the qualifications and experience required and how will they be trained? This was one question raised by MP Louis Ng in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 4). He also wanted to know about electronic monitoring, which the court can order if necessary for a victim’s protection. Mr Ng asked how this will be determined, whether there are plans for bilateral electronic monitoring - that is, of both perpetrator and victim - and who will have access to the data collected. He also asked if there are plans to increase policing to complement family violence orders, pointing out that “paper orders may not be sufficient to deter some offenders”.
