Ensure a minimum time period for divorce proceedings, and make counselling and mediation a requirement for divorcing couples. These were some suggestions made by MP Mariam Jaafar in Parliament on Monday (Jan 10) during the debate on the Women’s Charter (Amendment) Bill. She said such provisions could be “important safeguards” against criticism that the Bill makes divorce too easy. She also asked how the Government plans to strengthen enforcement of child access orders and address perceptions that divorce proceedings and support systems are often biased against men.
